The Challenge
Two Thousand Books, One Wall
Avid readers with a rental's worth of sagging flat-pack shelves bought a house with one great wall — and one non-negotiable: the television had to disappear. The wall also bowed half an inch over its length, and the floor sloped toward the chimney breast.
We built the carcass in sections in the shop, scribed it to the wonky wall on site, and hung a brass-railed ladder that glides the full run. The media bay hides the screen, soundbar, consoles and every cable behind ventilated, book-matched doors.
- 11 ft run, 9 ft high, ~2,000-book capacity
- Rolling ladder on a solid brass rail
- Concealed, ventilated media bay with cable routing
Approach & Outcome
A Library That Hides a Cinema
Shelves are adjustable on brass pins, uprights are notched for LED strips on dimmers, and the ladder locks with a foot brake so small climbers stay safe. The media doors close with a soft click — guests routinely ask where the television is.
Painted poplar keeps the budget sane while the oak ladder rail, desk ledge and picture light shelf add the warm touchpoints. The owners report reading more and arguing about the remote less.
